Accra, June 24, GNA – The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) has called on the Ghana Bar Association and lawyers resident in Ghana to support the disability inclusion campaign by offering pro-bono legal services for persons with disability
Mr Alexander Bankole Williams, Advocacy Committee Chairman of the GFD said it was about time that the disability movement in Ghana tested the law by going to court when their human rights were violated.
He said it had been 22 years since Act 715, the Disability Act, was passed and yet the rights of persons with disability to be included in development issues continued to be violated.
Mr Williams was part of the panelists discussing the Implementation of the Disability Act at a forum organised by the GFD with support from Ghana Somubi Dwumadie and Sight Savers, Ghana
The forum was in commemoration of the National Disability Day which was commemorated on the 23rd of June every year in Ghana.
Mr Williams said: “We as persons with disability should own the disability rights, we need to demand our rights and we need to protect our rights.”
The National Disability Day celebration in Ghana is observed on the day that Ghana passed the persons with disability Act into law.
The day is used to raise awareness of and seek the status of the implementation of the Disability Act.
