Ashie Quaye fires Great Olympics past Legon Cities

Accra, March 13, GNA – A first-half strike from Samuel Abbey Ashie Quaye ensured Great Olympics secured all three points against Legon Cities in a match-week 20 encounter played at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Great Olympics after the win stay third on the league table with 35 points while Legon Cities are placed 13th on 23 points, just two points above the drop zone.

The first half began with some exciting attacking exchanges between the two sides and Great Olympics striker Abdul Razak Yussif came close to giving the home side the lead, but his effort went wide.

The pressure from the home side was relentless and they deservedly went ahead in the 14th minute after Abbey Quaye tapped in from close range with Razak Yussif providing the assist.

Great Olympics looked very confident on the ball as they began to dominate possession halfway through the first half with Legon Cities largely on the back foot.

Great Olympics nearly doubled their lead on the half-hour mark but a timely clearance by goalkeeper Eric Antwi Ofori denied Olympics defender Solomon Adomako his first goal of the season.

Legon Cities Jonah Attuquaye who had seen much of the ball in the first half come close to restoring parity from a 25-yard free-kick but goalkeeper Stephen Kwaku dealt with the situation very comfortably.

Great Olympics maintained their solitary lead as the game kept going for recess.

Jonah Attuquaye who was the most lively player for Legon Cities tested Great Olympics goalkeeper Stephen Kwaku right at the start of the second half but the latter pulled off a spectacular save to deny the attacker.

Legon Cities had a strong penalty appeal in the 60th minute dismissed by FIFA Referee Daniel Laryea after a handball incident involving Great Olympics defender Solomon Adomako.

It was total dominance from the away side in the second half as they looked the more likely side to score the next goal, but the Olympics defence was very resolute at the back.

Legon Cities despite their dominance lacked the finishing touch to level the scores as Great Olympics held onto their solitary lead to secure all three points.
