Budapest, Feb 16, (dpa/GNA) – An overloaded van crashed into the wall of a house in southern Hungary early Wednesday, injuring the driver and some 26 migrants who had been travelling in the vehicle.
It is not known what caused the crash in the village of Forráskút, situated near the Serbian border, Hungarian police said.
In total, 17 people suffered serious injuries while 10 suffered minor injuries, the rescue service announced. Only two people escaped unharmed.
Alongside the driver, who is Belgian, the vehicle had been carrying 28 migrants.
The passengers, described in a police statement as “illegal migrants,” are believed to have climbed over the fence at the Hungarian-Serbian border before getting in the van.
The driver is now facing criminal proceedings for suspected people smuggling and causing a serious accident.
