Yilo Krobo MP works to improve educational standards

Apersua (E/R), Jan. 22, GNA – Mr Albert Nyakotey, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Yilo Krobo in the Eastern Region, is taking gritty steps to improve educational infrastructure in his constituency to enhance teaching and learning.

The move is also to increase access to education and enrolment, especially in rural communities, as well as ensure retention in school and optimum use of contact hours.

The MP has, thus, renovated the Apersua M/A Basic School and built a new kindergarten, which he handed over to the Ghana Education Service early this week.

His efforts inspired the community and brought smiles to the faces of the school children, who would now study in safe and comfortable classrooms.

The school children had endured the vagaries of the weather since 2013, which had regularly interrupted teaching and learning, when the school building was hit by a rainstorm.

Mr Nyakotey told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that, nearly a decade down the lane, his support had relieved children, teachers and community members of their predicament.

“Education is my priority so when the community appealed for help there was no hesitation, leading to the refurbishment and the construction of the KG block,” he said.

“In respect of education, I started supporting school children within Yilo Krobo who went to write the BECE with free mathematical set and extra classes last year to prepare them for a successful exam.”

The MP said he was facilitating the construction of a school at Agogo and collaborating with the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly to construct a junior high school at Apersua as part of his immediate educational intervention for the communities in his first year in office.

“I have already discussed with the MCE, Mr Eric Tetteh, and the education director because I am interested in the JHS. The community does not have a JHS and senior high school but there exist an E-Block,” he said.

“Immediately, I am going to provide the kindergarten class with required desks to start, and the discussion on the JHS would continue. The schoolchildren do not have to sit at home after basic school due to their inability to go to other towns to continue their education.”

Touching on the abandoned SHS E-block, he said he felt passionate about the Apersua Community Day SHS, which was furnished and in a good environment.

“Already, I have had a conference with the Parliamentary Committee on Education to come and examine the E-Block and I will continue to push because it is already three months after the conference and nothing had been done.”

Mr Nyarkotey has also rolled out a scholarship scheme for all those who qualified for tertiary education, especially those interested in pursuing courses at the University of Environment and Sustainable Development at Somanya as they could apply for funding support.

“The plan is in place and I am sure by the end of March or April, the scholarships would begin,” he said.

He promised to work closely with the Yilo Krobo MCE for the town to get the needed development and improve the living conditions of the people.
