Young Philip Selikem Yao Amoaku targets Chess Grandmaster

Accra, Dec.18 GNA – Philip Selikem Yao Amoako, who was honoured as the Chess Player of the year at the just held Sports Writers’ Association of Ghana (SWAG) Awards says his target is to become a Grandmaster in chess.

The 11year-old chess player, was nominated for the award after a successful chess season in the year winning silver medal in the African Youth Chess Championship and being the number one chess player in Ghana.

He made history as he was the youngest Ghanaian to attain the level of Master in Chess.

Speaking in an interview with the GNA Sports, Yao Amoako, expressed his excitement for winning the SWAG Chess Player of the Year and assured Ghanaians that he’ll train hard to ensure that he takes Ghana to higher heights in the game of chess.

“My dream is to become a Grandmaster and to be among the top names of Chess not only in my country but internationally,” he added.

The young Ghanaian chess sensation said he was positive that the future of chess was bright and with the right approach, more Ghanaians would get involved in chess and grow the game for it to become one of the most popular disciplines in the country.

Mr. Dennis Amoako, father of Master Philip Selikem Amoako said “when my son initially got interested in chess, I thought he was practically wasting his time because nobody had prior experience in the game but now, I know how wrong I was.

“The whole family is indeed blessed to have Philip as a member of the family and we would invest all effort to ensure his dreams come true”.
