Farmers encouraged to be climate sensitive

Takoradi, Sept 20, GNA – The Oil Palm Development Association of Ghana have been engaged on climate smart practices that will ensure sustainability.

The engagement was spearheaded by the Sustainability Planners International, (SPI) an NGO into climate change mitigate issues.

Reverend Lord Lucas Vodzi, the Executive Director of SPI encouraged the farmers to apply best practices to save the environment adding, “Our environment is our business and there is the need to apply best farming practices”.

SPI’s strategic direction points to Climate change adaptation and mitigation, Agriculture and Food security, Water and Sanitation, Energy and institutional strengthening by engaging in methodologies, processes, procedures and the insights of local and international policy inputs on sustainability issues.

It is a prime sustainability advocacy local enterprise group that intends to generate a niche in Ghana’s environment policy by putting out Sustainability objective, research, training and advocacy independent analysis and critique on issues using tried and tested Sustainability skills, he added.

Rev. Vodzi advised the farmer executives to come together and work at changing their attitude towards the environment for a mutual benefit.

The Executive Director, also a chartered Environmentalist stated that the SPI was currently supporting farmers in 18 mining communities precisely Tarkwa-Nsuaem and Prestea Huni-Valley Municipalities.

He noted that the SPI as a premier sustainability-minded professional enterprise was committed to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals and would collaborate with organizations that intend to make implementation of this internationally recognized framework for sustainability progress a reality.

Mr Martin Ola Efunwole, Chairman of the Oil Palm group said the association was formed to help address some of the problems facing the oil sector in Ghana.

The association sought to increase the competiveness of the oil palm industry by way of improving on good management practices, market linkages and provide an even trading grounds among key value chain actors in the industry.

The Chairman also noted how COVID-19 had affected their businesses and how innovative and sustainable farming practices was even more critical.
