CRS supports sanitation exercise of North East Region

Tamale, July 02, GNA – Catholic Relief Services (CRS), an international non-governmental organisation, has presented items to the North East Regional Coordinating Council (NERCC) to support its Regional Sanitation Day exercise to keep the region clean.

The items worth GH¢14,635.00 included 25 pieces of rakes, 25 pieces of wheel barrows, 100 pieces of wooden standing brooms, 100 pieces of utility hand gloves, 20 boxes of face masks and 20 bottles of hand sanitiser.

The NERCC made a request to the CRS for support to launch the Regional Sanitation Day and routine clean-up campaign in the region, hence, the CRS’ support.

The NERCC under the leadership of the North East Regional Minister, Mr Yidana Zakaria, had launched the Regional Sanitation Day and earmarked the first Saturday of every month for clean-up exercise to be undertaken by all residents to keep their environment clean.

Carolyn Edlebeck, Head of Programming at CRS at a brief ceremony in Tamale on Friday, handed over the items on behalf of CRS to Mr Abdulai Sulemana Tanko, Assistant Director (1) of the NERCC on behalf of the Regional Minister.

Mr Festus Barfi Fofie, Senior Project Officer, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) at CRS said the Regional Sanitation Day aligned with the vision of CRS and the sustainability agenda of its Integrated Community Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Improvement (ICOWASH 2.0) project, hence, the support.

The ICOWASH project sought to stimulate government leadership and commitment in the delivery of WASH services to all.

Mr Fofie said, “CRS applauds the region’s efforts to take the issue of sanitation seriously and wishes to assure the region of its continuous support and collaboration in the delivery of quality services to the vulnerable populations.”

Mr Tanko expressed gratitude to CRS for the support saying “We really appreciate the fact that CRS is supporting the region in the WASH activities. These items will help push the agenda of the region forward.”

He added that “We will distribute them amongst Municipal and District Assemblies so that every Saturday of a new month, they will come out in their numbers and clean up their environment to ensure sound work and reduce the incidences of disease and poverty in the area.”
