Ahafoman SHTS lauds GhaWARD’s role modeling agenda

Goaso (A/R), July 06, GNA – The Students and teachers of Ahafoman Senior High Technical School (ASHTS) at Goaso, Asunafo North Municipality of Ahafo Region have lauded the career development agenda of the Ghana Women in Agricultural Research and Development (GhaWARD) Association.

According to the students, that project was designed pragmatically to help in their choices of subjects tailored for specific academic disciplines at the tertiary level to make the right career decisions that would help them to become assets and not liabilities to their families and society.

The commendation was made during GhaWARD’s role modeling, mentoring, and awareness creation campaign at the school on Tuesday.

GhaWARD is the Ghana chapter of the African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya with more than 25 participating African countries.

Addressing the students and teachers about the objectives and activities of GhaWARD, Dr Mrs Mercy Derkyi, the National President and Dean, School of Natural Resources, University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Sunyani said the Association aims at helping students through its awareness drive to identify their “career opportunities in the natural resources, management, agricultural sciences, and engineering”.

Other objectives, Dr Mrs Derkyi added include guiding young people to be able to attain their wishes, hopes, and aspirations academically and professionally to positively impact society.

In a presentation, Engineer Dr Mary Antwi, a Soil Scientist at UENR taught the students about major advantages in natural resources development and therefore urged them to be nationalistic and environmental protection conscious to contribute in diverse ways for sustainable environment and development.

She informed them the Ahafo Region was endowed with a lot of natural resources like the forest, water, minerals, and foodstuffs that could offer numerous job opportunities for them in the future and encouraged aged them to endeavor to pursue natural resources programs at the tertiary level of education.

Dr Antwi said a senior high school student could pursue either engineering, agricultural, or natural resources programs to become soil scientists, crop breeders, agricultural consultants, and forest managers among others.

Earlier in a welcoming address, Mr Derick Adu-Gyamfi, the Headmaster commended the GhaWARD for the eye-opening information for the students, saying that would equip them to have an interest in exploring nature and build their capacities in the future.
