Italy’s dance club operators hope to reopen in early July

Rome, June 26, (dpa/GNA) – Club operators in Italy are increasingly hopeful that they will soon be able to reopen their dance floors.

Italian media reported on Friday and Saturday that the experts of the scientific council at the Ministry of Health had given the green light for a limited reopening at the beginning of July.

The panel recommended dance club operation only for those in so-called white zones – parts of the country where the coronavirus incidence is at its lowest nationally and rules to control the spread of the virus can be relaxed – and which can operate outdoors and with a maximum occupancy rate of 50 per cent, the ANSA news agency wrote.

According to the reports, only potential patrons who can present a so-called green Covid-19 certificate would be allowed to enter. The certificate can be obtained by people who can prove they have been vaccinated against the disease, have recovered from it or have a negative coronavirus test.

The council’s statements do not constitute a decision: The government has the final say in the matter.

Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti welcomed the experts’ stance. “On Monday we will ask to set a date for the opening,” he announced on Friday evening.

Club owners and the unions have been demanding a clear announcement on reopening for weeks.

In Italy, more and more restrictions are being dropped due to positive developments in the coronavirus infection situation.

Starting on Monday, white zone rules will apply to the entire country.

In addition, the obligation to wear a mask outdoors will be dropped as long as safe distances can be maintained. People who are indoors and on public transport must continue to wear masks.
