Ho, May 29, GNA – The Volta Regional Museum has been re-opened three years after it was closed for renovation works.
Mr Ivor Agyeman- Duah, Acting Executive Director, Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB), said though the closure was long, the work had given a new outlook and architectural dignity to the facility.
He disclosed that the government of Germany provided a grant of 25,000 Euros to support the work on the main gallery while the GMMB financed the rest using its Internally Generated Fund of more than GH¢ 200,000.00
The museum now has an education centre, a new craft market and a vocational facility, which were funded by Ghana Gas as part of its corporate social responsibility.
Mr Agyeman-Duah said the education centre would provide an opportunity for students to learn about their heritage.
There is also a cafeteria, which was done by GMMB, in partnership with Safe Ghana, a Non-Governmental Organisation to provide services to patrons of the facility.
Mr Agyeman-Duah thanked the German government and others, who in diverse ways supported the project.
He charged the management of the facility to ensure that it was properly maintained and put to good use.
Mr Christoph Retzlaff, the German Ambassador to Ghana, said he was happy to see the fully renovated facility being re-opened.
It is good to see the reopening of the Volta Regional Museum…it is a testimony to our shared partial heritage in the Region, he said.
Mr Abdorahamane Diallo, a representative of UNESCO, said with an exhibition of chief stools, sword, wood crafts, and local paintings, among others, the museum would provide the sense of community and place by celebrating the connective history and heritage of the Region and the country as a whole.
He urged the people to ensure that the facility maintained its function as a meeting place of inspiration, sharing and cultural mediation.
Mr Diallo underscored the importance of the musesum in equipping the youth with knowledge of their heritage and entreated them to take advantage of it ‘to learn about and honour the past.’
Dr Archibald Yao Letsa, Volta Regional Minister, said the Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) was ready to support every effort of the government to make the Museum serve its purpose.
He said museums thrive on best management practices and, therefore, called on managers of the facility to ensure proper maintenance.
