Cape Coast, May 29, GNA – President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Saturday became the 40th outstanding personality to have an honorary doctorate conferred on him at a Special Congregation held in his honour at the University of Cape Coast (UCC).
He is the second President of the Republic of Ghana, after former President John Agyekum Kufuor, to receive the highest honours of the University.
Constituting the congregation for the commencement of the ceremony, the Chancellor of the University, Dr (Sir) Sam Jonah, enumerated the exceptional achievements of President Akufo-Addo, stressing that he deserved the honours because of his life time achievements.
He mentioned the many social interventions, including the policy on teacher education and its regulatory reforms, technical, and Vocational training reforms, among many others.
Dr Jonah said the most special mention of the President’s achievements was the Free Senior High School Education, which granted impeded access to many Ghanaian children who would not have gained access to secondary education due to the financial burden on parents and guardians.
Since the introduction of Free Secondary education in September 2017, more than a million graduates have benefitted to contribute their quota to national development.
“You embarked on many reforms in the education sector….. introducing the Free Senior High School Education which is the mementoes social intervention ever taken in the Country despite its financial burden, which had lifted the financial burden on many parents and guardians.
“With your achievements and distinguished service to humanity, the University of Cape Coast is honoured and privileged to confer the honorary doctorate to the President,” Dr Sir Jonah added.
The Chancellor appealed to the President to remember the University wherever he would find himself as an alumnus of the University.
Present at the ceremony are High profiled personalities, including the Minister of Education, Mr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II, Oguaamanhen, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Members of Parliament, Nana Prah Agyensaim I, Omanhene of Owirenkyiman Traditional Area, among others.
