Accra, March 18, GNA – The United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC) on Thursday donated books on piracy and maritime crime to the Judicial Service of Ghana.
The books cover areas in maritime security, piracy, and robbery at sea as well as prosecutors guide on narcotic related cases.
Mr Bernard Henebeng Asamoah, National Programme Coordinator, UNODC, said the presentation was a response to a request made by the Chief Justice at a meeting held last year where he outlined a number of items that they needed, including communication equipment, computers and books to aid judges and prosecutors.
He said they searched far to get various titles from various authors and experts in relevant fields and hoped that they would help the Judicial Service in their fight against piracy and maritime crime.
He assured that the other communication equipment including Laptops, Computers, Video Communication equipment among others would be presented to the Service soon.
The Chief Justice, Justice Kwesi Anin-Yeboah, receiving the books on behalf of the Judicial Service, expressed gratitude to the UNODC, saying, it was his firm belief that the books would go a long way to expose the judges to new areas of the law.
He said “as the world keeps on changing, the modes of committing crimes also keeps changing and new books like these would help resolve some of the problems they were facing.”
The Chief Justice assured them that the books would be put to good use for the people of Ghana.
He said the Service had benefited very well from the UNODC and they were going to commit judges to the training programmer so that they could also gather the necessary experience especially in areas which were fairly new to them.
