German business confidence slumps sharply amid coronavirus

Berlin, Jan. 25, (dpa/GNA) – German business confidence fell sharply in January, underlining the threat posed to Europe’s biggest economy by tough new restrictions aimed at containing the spreading of the coronavirus.

The Munich-based ifo economic research institute said its closely watched business climate index fell to 90.1 points this month, from an upwardly revised December reading of 92.2.

Analysts had forecast a drop in January to 91.4 from a previously estimated 92.1 in December.
