Accra, Jan. 31, GNA — The 2021 national finals of ‘The Spelling Bee’ competition is scheduled for February 6 to celebrate the commitment, trust, and resilience of spellers, parents, guardians, and sponsors.
The event would be held behind closed doors with only spellers, parents, and guardians in attendance with strict adherence to the COVID-19 preventive measures.
The unpredictable nature of Covid-19 had destabilised many organisations and events, including, The Spelling Bee,” a statement signed by Madam Eugenia Tachie-Menson, the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Young Educators Foundation, organisers of competition, said.
“However, the resilience of our spellers, parents, guardians, and our sponsors has proven to us that our work, which began 13 years ago, has had and continues to have a substantial impact on the education of the Ghanaian child,” it said.
“That is why we are proud to announce that The Spelling Bee National Finals will be held on February 6, 2021, as scheduled.”
The statement said as the competition drew nearer, it would like to use this year’s edition to celebrate the spellers’ confidence and trust as they had justified their inclusion since March 2020.
Parents would, however, show their support in a separate room at the same venue to ensure the safety of all in attendance.
“Indeed, time without number, The Spelling Bee has proven that it’s more than just Spelling. It is impacting the lives of our future generation and inspiring them to explore the world of words and reading.
“This year’s national finals promise to be one of our most exciting editions to look out for, as we salute our 60 finalists. Due to their commendable fidelity and resilience, we’ve beefed-up the prizes for Spellers and schools participating…with our sponsors’ support.”
The competition would be shown live on Citi TV on Saturday, February 6, 2021, at 1300 hours and citizens can follow live updates of the event on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
“The 2021 winner has the chance to appear on the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the United States of America to represent Ghana, the only African country that continues to participate in this International Competition,” it said.
Other prizes include products and souvenirs from sponsors and partners.
“The Spelling Bee” is presented by Indomie and supported by DSTV, US Embassy-Accra, Citi TV/FM, Rufus Green Parks, Goil, Ashesi University, Kenya Airways, Frankies, the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Charity Foundation, and the Links Inc.
