Israel strikes Hamas targets in Gaza after rockets fired

Tel Aviv, Dec. 26, (dpa/GNA) – Israel’s military said early Sunday it had struck Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip.

A rocket manufacturing site, underground infrastructure and a military post were targeted, the Israel Defence Forces said in a Twitter post.
The IDF said it was responding to rockets fired from Gaza towards southern Israel on Saturday night.

“Hamas will bear the consequences for all terror emanating from Gaza,” the IDF wrote.
Hours earlier, Israel’s military said two rockets were intercepted by its Iron Dome aerial defence system.

Though of late, other, smaller Palestinian factions have been behind sporadic fire from Gaza, Israel holds Hamas responsible for all fire from the Gaza Strip.

Hamas controls the Strip, where some 2 million Palestinians live in crowded, impoverished conditions.

Despite a Qatari-brokered truce between Hamas and Israel, there have been several flare-ups of violence over the past months.

Israel, the United States and the European Union have listed Hamas as a terrorist organization.
