Facebook announces ban on ads that discourage vaccination

San Francisco, Oct. 14, (dpa/GNA) – Facebook said on Tuesday that it will now ban advertisements that discourage users from getting a vaccine, in the US technology giant’s latest campaign to combat misinformation around the coronavirus pandemic.

It is unclear how strict Facebook’s policy will be on anti-vaccination content since the ban applies to advertisements that “explicity” discourage someone from being vaccinated.

“Ads that advocate for or against legislation or government policies around vaccines – including a Covid-19 vaccine – are still allowed,” Facebook said.

The campaign, timed to coincide with the start of flu season, also includes a flu vaccine information campaign, which seeks to amplify the voices of public health experts.

“Our goal is to help messages about the safety and efficacy of vaccines reach a broad group of people, while prohibiting ads with misinformation that could harm public health efforts,” Facebook said.
