Final phase of voters’ registration begins smoothly in parts of Accra 

Accra, Aug. 01, GNA – The Electoral Commission (EC)on Saturday , started the final phase of the voter registration exercise in all the 16 regions ahead of the December 07 polls.

Just like the previous five phases, officials of the Commission are moving from centre to centre to capture all eligible voters on the new register.

A visit to some centres in the Greater Accra Region by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) showed that a few areas had applicants waiting to be registered. 

Mr Walter Botchwey, a Registration Officer at Elshadia Study Centre One Registration Centre said as at 1100hours, the centre had registered 15 persons with five waiting for their turn in a queue.

He said the process had been peaceful and that applicants were strictly observing the COVID-19 protocols, which included; wearing of face mask, washing of hands with soap under running water and the application of hand sanitizer. 

Nii Ayi Bonte, an applicant who had successfully registered said the process was smooth and that it took him five minutes to go through. 

He said he was afraid to visit the registration centre due to COVID-19, but the set up gave him confidence and he was happy he registered.

At the Jamestown Social Welfare Centre Zone ‘A’ Registration Centre, a total of 39 applicants registered successfully as at 1000 hours.

Madam Dorcas Bobah, the Registration Officer said the exercise was proceeding smoothly, adding, “Today is the first that we haven’t recorded any challenge.”

A few applicants the GNA spotted in a queue not too long, looked relaxed awaiting their turn to be registered.

At the American Car Registration Centre in the Odododiodio constituency, only a handful of prospective registrants were seen in a queue, after a total of 30 were registered and issued with cards by 12 noon.
