Coach Sarpong backs GFA on the cancellation of football season

Accra, July 1, GNA – Veteran coach, Joseph E. Sarpong, has said the cancellation of the 2019/20 football season is the right decision by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

The Executive Council of the GFA on Tuesday, June 30, announced the annulment of all records associated with the 2019/20 football season with no demotion and promotion amid the Coronavirus pandemic which prompted a halt of the season back in March.

The highly experienced Coach Sarpong described the step taken by the GFA as a bold one and presents them with an opportune time to prepare very well for the next football season and also to safeguard lives amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

“The decision to cancel the league was imminent considering the stringent measures put in place by the Government to help curb the spread of the virus.

“Some people thought we could join the European countries in resuming our league forgetting that we don’t have sponsors to help fund clubs to follow the basic health guidelines for the safe return of football.

“All we need to do is to plan very well for the next football season and synchronize our calendar with that of the Europeans,” he told GNA Sports.

When asked about the decision of the GFA to name Ashantigold and Asante Kotoko as representatives for Africa, coach Sarpong said, “the GFA’s decision is in accordance with CAF statues because they two clubs did represent us in previous competitions on the continent.

“The question as to whether they would be ready for the competition should be left for the clubs to decide because it is important they represent us to we don’t lose our slots in Africa’s club competition.”

The Executive Council of the GFA would on Thursday, July 2, 2020, meet to discuss issues relating to the next football and the possibility of holding a Congress.
