South Dayi Assembly supports PWDs

Kpeve (V/R) May 06, GNA – The South Dayi District Assembly in the Volta Region has presented assorted items to 24 Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).

The items valued at GHC48, 719.00 are to empower the PWDs economically and improve their well-being and standard of living.

They included; deep freezers, one mobile cassava mill, two tomato mills, bags of charcoal, bags of rice, bags of sugar, gallons of vegetable oil, boxes of tooth paste, boxes of tomato paste, boxes of key soap and packs of maggi cube.

Mr Ernest Patrick Kodzo Mallet, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area said government was determined to support PWDs to become economically independent.

He said to make PWDs productive and to reduce poverty, government decided to support them with income generating provisions instead of cash supports.

The DCE said the Assembly would continue to prioritize the needs of PWDs and give them the needed support to enable them become self-reliant to contribute to the growth of society.

He said the items were presented to the people based on business plans submitted to the Assembly by the beneficiaries and asked them to make proper use of them.

Mr Mallet said the Assembly had a monitoring team to monitor activities of the beneficiaries to ensure that the items were used judiciously.

The DCE also asked the beneficiaries to adhere to the President’s directive on social gathering and observe the World Health Organization’s health safety protocols to stem the spread of COVID-19.

He said concerted effort and attitudinal change were required in the fight against the novel coronavirus and called on all to support government in its effort at tackling the pandemic.

Madam Emma Adom, the District Director of Social Welfare asked the beneficiaries to make good use of the items to enhance their lots.

She said over 190 PWDs had so far benefited from the District Disability Fund and urged those who did not benefit to exercise patience, saying they would also benefit in due time.

She advised the beneficiaries to cultivate the habit of savings to save some income generated through the use of the items to make proper provision for the future.

The beneficiaries were grateful to the government and the Assembly for the support and promised to make proper use of the items.
