Agbozume (VR), April 15, GNA – The Ketu South Municipal Assembly has taken steps to enforce precautionary measures meant to contain and prevent the spread of COVID-19 after recording six cases.
The Assembly spent the Easter Monday, a day after the area recorded six new cases, ensuring directives it issued on Sunday night regarding closure of markets on designated market days, beach resorts and entertainment centres in line with the social distancing protocol, were complied with.
The directives were contained in a communiqué issued by the assembly.
A market day at Agbozume saw a dispatched team of security officials early in the morning closing the market to traders and buyers.
Mr Elliot Edem Agbenorwu, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ketu South later in the day, led the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) to engage the seven-member executive of the Agbozume Market.
He said the decision to lock down the market on Monday morning was “taken out of love for the people over the six recorded cases in the Municipality the previous day to avoid the overcrowding.”
Mr Agbenorwu said it was important for residents to take the social distancing and other personal hygiene protocols seriously in the wake of the outbreak in the Municipality and appealed for compliance for the common good of all.
Madam Stella Agbemabiase, Chairperson, Agbozume Market Executives decried the manner in which the market was closed without adequate information to relevant stakeholders saying, it posed great inconvenience to traders who had travelled far and near to transact business.
She however, acknowledged the efforts of the Assembly and the government to prevent the spread of the pandemic and assured that her leadership would engage the traders for the day to day operation of the market in observance of the social distance directive.
Meanwhile, when the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited popular beaches at Denu and Aflao (where hundreds of revellers would have visited on a normal picnic day), the places were empty, except for some fisherwomen who sat under coconut trees awaiting a fishing vessel to buy tuna and a heavy presence of naval officers ensuring people adhered to the social distance protocol.
At Atlantic Beach Hotel, Aflao, the bar was empty while at D’Gulf Beach Resort, its Manager, Mr Godsway Amenyo, told the GNA that the place was not opened to the public on the day.
