MLGRD leads exercise to disinfect markets in Ashanti Region

Kumasi, March 27, GNA – The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) has led a mass exercise to disinfect more than 200 local markets in the Ashanti Region.

The programme saw personnel of the Zoomlion Ghana Limited and National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) assisting all 43 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the Region to spray the various markets for public safety.

It was in line with measures instituted by the government to keep the markets clean in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ghana had over the last two weeks recorded 136 confirmed cases of the disease.

Mr. Augustine Collins Ntim, Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Kumasi, on the sideline of the programme, affirmed government’s resolve to tackle the fight against COVID-19 with the seriousness it deserved.

Consequently, the authorities were working with corporate institutions to make available at the various local markets alcohol based hand sanitizers for public use.

He cautioned the citizenry to put premium on personal hygiene, and asked managers of the markets to check the haphazard dumping of refuse.

Mr. Osei Assibey-Antwi, the Mayor of Kumasi, lauded traders for complying with directives regarding the disinfection exercise.
