Sekondi, Dec. 13, GNA – Ms. Maribel Akouko Okine, the Western Regional Director of Gender, says men are more likely to contract cholera due to their frequent patronage of food vendors who often handle food improperly.

On the other hand, some men, due to their adherence to stereotypical gender ideologies on homemaking among other reasons, were more likely to also contract cholera.

Cholera is a highly infectious disease that affects everyone, regardless of age, sex, or socioeconomic status with devastating consequences on both women and men.

The regional Director of Gender told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that cholera has devastating consequences on both women and men with women, who often took on caregiving roles, at higher risk of infection when caring for family members with cholera.

She said for the male to stay safe; it was therefore essential to invest in home-cooked meals adding, that men who previously had different views on cooking should reconsider their stance for their safety.

The Gender Director noted the need to prioritise prevention regardless of age, sex, gender, or occupation, and called for proper hygiene practices, safe food handling and access to clean water.

She said cholera prevention was a collective responsibility that required the efforts of individuals, communities, and governments.
