Accra, Nov. 29, GNA- Ambassador Mohammed Lawan Gana, ECOWAS Resident Representative to Ghana, has urged the youth to actively engage in the country’s political discourse while avoiding electoral violence.
He said that such involvement would help the youth better understand political processes and ensure their voices are heard in shaping the future of West Africa.
Ambassador Gana made these remarks at a Regional Sensitization workshop on ECOWAS protocols for students and youth in Accra.
The workshop, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration in partnership with ECOWAS, drew over 15 selected Senior High Schools from the capital.
The event aimed to raise awareness among young people about ECOWAS protocols, policies, and programmes that influence the economic, political, and social landscape of West Africa.
Ambassador Gana highlighted the importance of understanding ECOWAS’ governing protocols, which include the free movement of people, residency, democracy, and good governance.
He encouraged the students to learn about ECOWAS policies, how they affect the youth, and how they can actively contribute to shaping the region’s collective future.
Ambassador Gana noted that ECOWAS programmes, among others, focused on youth empowerment and conflict prevention, with the aim to engage young people in positive activities that contribute to human capital development.
He said that ECOWAS was founded with the vision of promoting peace, security, and shared prosperity for all member states.
“As the leaders of tomorrow, it is essential that the youth understand the mechanisms that drive regional integration, cooperation, and development in our countries,” he said.
Mr. Rames J. Cleland, Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, stated that the workshop would explore impactful projects currently underway that significantly influence the region’s social, economic, and political landscape.
He emphasized that the sensitization programme aimed to foster a sense of ownership, engagement, and responsibility within communities, encouraging them to actively contribute to the ECOWAS vision.
Mr. Cleland urged all participants to commit to open exchanges of ideas and perspectives to better appreciate the crucial role ECOWAS played in shaping the future of the region.
