Accra, Nov. 29, GNA – Professor Hannah Emma Acquaye, a counselling Psychologist and lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba, has advised caregivers of children to desist from comparing children.
“Do not compare children to one another, every child is unique,” she said and explained that comparing children could affect their self-esteem and behaviour in a negative way.
Prof. Acquaye was the guest speaker at the International Conference for Counsellors and Associates and Annual General meeting.
The conference and AGM organised by the Ghana National Association of Certificated Counsellors was on the theme: “Playful minds, healthy hearts: Unlocking Mental well-being in early childhood.
Prof. Acquaye said children are not mini adults, they are human beings with emotions. Children deserve to be respected.
She advised caregivers as well as parents to demonstrate empathy and kindness when dealing with children since children emulate a lot of what adults do and not necessarily what adults say.
Ms Anna Plange, Ag. Registrar at the Ghana Psychological Council who took participants through the work of the Ghana Psychological Council urged participants to ensure that they get licenced from the GPC before they practise
Dr Cecelia Tutu-Danquah, President of the Ghana National Association of Certificated Counsellors and Associates (GNACC) urged the participants to put what they learn during the conference into use,
Awards were given to deserving members of the Association.
