Owusu-Boakye’s stunner secures vital point for Karela against Great Olympics

Accra, Jan. 9, GNA – Substitute Emmanuel Owusu Boakye scored an 86th minute equalizer for Karela United as they secured a crucial point against Great Olympics in match-week 12 of the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League encounter played at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Raymond Oko Grippman opened the scoring for the home side in the 66th minute but the away side persisted in the dying embers of the game to rescue a point with Owusu-Boakye’s stunning strike.

Great Olympics with the draw stay sixth on the league table with 18 points while Karela United are 11th on the league log with 14 points.

The game started with some end to end action in the first quarter but Great Olympics were much better in possession and controlled the game.

Great Olympics attacking midfielder Emmanuel Akesseh had a good opportunity to put the home side ahead past the half hour mark but his strike was very feeble and was safely gathered by Karela United goalkeeper Felix Kyei.

Karela United on the other hand barely had any clear sight with their only opportunity in the first half falling for Umar Bashiru whose free-kick from 25 yards narrowly missed the target.

The first half ended scoreless.

Great Olympics were on the front foot at the start of the second half as they searched for the opener.

Striker Samuel Armah nearly put the home side ahead in the 47th minute with a close range strike but his effort was cleared off the line by Ebenezer Okrah.

The pressure from the home side was rampant as they pressed the Karela United defense for the opener.

Once again Ebenezer Okrah delivered a last ditch clearance on the line to deny Great Olympics attacker Sulley Ibrahim the opener in 64th but the eventual corner was turned in by Oko Grippman as Olympics deservedly took the lead.

The urgency from the away side was evident as they started pressing the Olympics defense for the equalizer but lacked prolificacy in front of goal.

Great Olympics seemed much more comfortable in possession with five minute to end proceedings but Karela United substitute Owusu Boakye had other ideas as he struck a wonderful shot from outside the penalty to stun Great Olympics goalie Stephen Kwaku.

Both sides shared the spoils at the end of a highly entertaining encounter.
