Twifo Bobi (C/R), July 09, GNA-The Kakum Hotspot Intervention Area (HIA) in the Twifo-Hemang-Lower- Denkyira district of the central region has appealed to traditional leaders to protect the environment from illegal mining activities.
Mr Joseph Nicholas Nkrumah, chairman of Kakum HIA, made the appeal during a sod-cutting ceremony at Twifo Bobi to begin the construction of a Community Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound for the community.
He emphasised that illegal mining contributed significantly to flooding in Ghana, advocating for environmental protection and tree planting.
Mr Anthony Nana Acquah, chairman of Twifo Praso sub-HIA, highlighted the Community Resources Management Area’s (CRMA) mission to protect natural resources.
He noted the extensive environmental damage caused by illegal mining and stressed the importance of safeguarding remaining resources.
Nana Kofi Ayensu III, chief of Twifo Bobi, expressed disappointment with local officials for not fulfilling promises to construct a CHPS compound and improve infrastructure.
He thanked the CRMA for their support in the community and called for more assurance to develop the area.
The Kakum HIA is a community-based organisation with an objective to protect natural resources within the forest reserve, cocoa farms, and water bodies to ensure a healthy environment and favourable climatic conditions for farmers, thereby supporting sustainable agriculture and improving livelihoods.
