Irate youth vandalise Wenchi police station, release eight inmates

Wenchi, (Bono), Dec. 10, GNA – Some irate youth, in the early hours of Tuesday raided the Wenchi Police Station in the Bono Region, vandalised properties, broke into the police cell and forcibly released eight inmates.

A police source which confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Wenchi said that the inmates included a convict, two remand prisoners and five suspects.

The youth vandalised the private vehicle of the police commander, damaged a coloured flat screen television, refrigerator and the slide doors of the station and computers, and other state properties.

According to the source, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Nana Boakye Yiadom together with some police officers had earlier gone to effect an arrest of a suspect at Tohaba, a suburb of Wench.

“When they got to the house the suspect was not in the house, so they arrested his pregnant wife and brought her to the station”, the source stated.

The youth mobilised themselves and went to the police station to vent their anger on the police commander who fired a gunshot to disperse them.

However, they forcibly took the gun from the commander and subjected him to severe beatings.

The source added that the police commander had since been admitted to, and receiving treatment at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital.

No arrest has so far been made, as police investigations continue.
