Kumasi, Nov. 23, GNA – The Ashanti Regional Peace Council has urged all stakeholders in the upcoming general elections to work together to promote a peaceful election with barely two weeks to elect a new president and parliamentarians.

The call follows historical trends in the region during elections and early warning signals picked by the Council as Ghana heads to the polls on December 7, this year.

A statement issued by the Council and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi, entreated all key actors in the election to preserve the peace in the Region.

The statement signed by the Rt. Rev. Dr. Nuh Ben Abubekr, Chairman of the Council, reminded everyone that both the country and the electoral processes are governed by laws, stressing the need for all to play by the rules.

The election management bodies are obliged to be committed to upholding the integrity of the election with citizens expected to observe the rules to ensure a transparent, fair, inclusive, accountable, and credible election, the statement emphasised.

It said everyone had a responsibility to abide by the rules to achieve and maintain peace in the region.

“We are encouraged to be patient, empathic and trust institutions of peace building and support the National Peace Architecture at all times,” it urges Ghanaians.

It also called on all citizens to support efforts by the Council to address early warning signs to prevent electoral dispute escalations in the upcoming elections.

The media must also continue to play its role in upholding Ghana’s democratic dispensation, which is admired globally.

“Let us help to make this election another successful and peaceful one by our actions to preach and re-echo peace messages in our reportage till the whole atmosphere is diffused and resonates with nothing but the flavor of peace,” the statement concluded.
