Keta: Azizadzi Sand Bar opened to mitigate flood situations

Kedzi (VR) Oct. 27, GNA-The engineers responsible for operating on the Azizadzi floodgate in the Keta Municipality of the Volta region have finally opened the sand bar to allow the Lagoon to flow into the sea freely without any havoc.

The move was to mitigate the flooding situations of the lagoon in Keta, Anloga, and its surrounding communities, which was caused by the spillage of the Akosombo Dam.

Mr Rex Edeckor, a former consultant in charge of the Keta Sea Defense project, who is also the lead engineer for the opening of the floodgate and the cutting of the sand bar, told the GNA the flood situations in the areas were getting dangerous, which required urgent attention.

“This is also done in some other countries and our situation would not be different since the opening of the floodgate and the cutting of the sand bar is the only option,” he said.

Mr Edeckor added that the flow of the water into the sea would be monitored technically by other engineers to prevent any unforeseen disaster.

He urged the residents at Kedzi, Havedzi, Horvi, and the surrounding communities to remain calm.

Mr Emmanuel Gemegah, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Keta, in an earlier interaction with the GNA, disclosed that further engagements, plans, and arrangements were put in place to open the floodgate and the sand bar to alleviate the flooding challenges in the area.

“Other consultations were conducted to address agitations and fears of the communities around the operational area,” he said.

He explained that other plans such as funding, relocation, and others were put in place to tackle any occurring situation.

Mr Gemegah cautioned residents and fisherfolks at the various communities to suspend fishing around the floodgate and the sand bar to avoid any untoward incident.

The GNA also understands that some engagements with the elders and some youth groups of Kedzi, who have earlier protested the cutting of the sand bar to allow the flow of the lagoon into the sea were held.

They claimed the move could affect and displace many.
