NAVASCO 2000 Year Group gives to Alma Mata

Navrongo (U/E), July 13, GNA – The 2000-year group of the Navrongo Senior High School (NAVASCO) in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality of the Upper East Region has donated 26 ceiling fans worth GHc8,500.00 to their Alma Mata.

The fans and its accessories were installed in the classrooms to provide a cool environment for effective teaching and learning especially during peak of heat and harsh weather conditions.

The gesture was also in response to a request by authorities of the school to the year group in April this year, to assist them with fans to help reduce the effects of high temperature on academic work, especially during March and April.

At a short presentation ceremony in Navrongo, Dr Edward Naabil, a member of the 2000-year group, said the school had requested 39 ceiling fans to equip the classrooms to make students comfortable.

Dr Naabil, who is also a Senior Lecturer at the Bolgatanga Technical University, reiterated the commitment of the year group to completely fulfil the request and initiate special projects to help contribute to academic excellence of their Alma Mata.

He appealed to other members of the year group to join them to make significant impact and contribute their quota to the development of the school.

“The objective of the year group is to look at how we can help contribute back to our Alma Mata and to see how we can support each other. So apart from the fans we will be looking at the next initiative that we can contribute back to the school,” he added.

Receiving the gesture, Mrs Mercy Babachuweh, the Headmistress of the School, expressed gratitude to the 2000 year group for responding swiftly to their request and noted that it was a big relief to staff and students.

She said because of the harsh weather conditions particularly the scorching sun experienced during March and April in Northern part of Ghana, it made it difficult for the students to concentrate in class which had adverse effects on their academic outputs.

The Headmistress noted that over the years old students had been supporting the school in diverse ways and appealed to them to help refurbish some classrooms of the schools which had their ceiling and walls damaged exposing the students to health hazards.

Mrs Babachuweh further appealed to the government to as matter of urgency complete the construction of the 12-unit classroom block and girls’ dormitory block which had been stalled.

She said their completion would help decongest the classrooms and dormitories to ensure effective teaching and learning and sanitary living.

Master Sharif Tiisu, the Senior Prefect of the School thanked the old students for the constant support to the school and advised his colleagues to be disciplined and learn to achieve academic excellence.

He however, appealed to the government to find a lasting solution to the striking teachers’ demands to enable them return to the classroom to help them prepare well for their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

He lamented that the current candidates had their academic work interrupted by the outbreak of the COVID-19 which made it difficult for many schools to exhaust their syllabus and the strike would further hamper their chances of excelling at the examination.
