Eastern Region FDA registers 340 street food vendors

Koforidua, June 19, GNA – The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) as at the close of May this year registered about 340 street food vendors as part of the ‘Street Food Vending Scheme’ in Koforidua and other Municipalities.

Other covered areas included New Juaben South and North, Kwahu West and Nsawam Adogyiri.

Mr Samuel Kwakye, Eastern Regional Head of FDA who disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said the registration was to ensure food safety and hygiene to protect the consuming public.

He said most people bought food from street vendors, hence the need to ensure that they met the standards for safety of the consumers.

He noted that the scheme was being piloted in four selected Districts in the Region, namely New Juaben South, Kwahu West, New Juaben North and Nsawam Adoagyiri.

There is an inspection exercise at places where foods for sale are prepared and points of selling alongside the registration.

Environmental Health Officers from the four districts have been trained by the FDA to inspect to meet the objective and ensure the safety of all consumers in the areas.
