Sixteen bodies found in central Mexican state

Mexico City, Feb. 6, (dpa/GNA) – A total of 16 bodies have been discovered almost simultaneously in two locations in one of the most dangerous areas of Mexico.

The attorney general’s office in the central state of Zacatecas confirmed the discovery on Saturday of 10 bodies in Fresnillo and six more in Pánfilo Natera, about 100 kilometres away – both just outside the state capital, Zacatecas.

Mexican media reported that in Fresnillo, the 10 bodies were found wrapped in blankets on a street. The other six were found hanging from a railing.

There are numerous drug cartels and other criminal groups, often with links to corrupt politicians and security forces, fighting for control of territory in parts of Mexico.

Last year, official statistics record an average of 94 murders per day, with nearly 100,000 people missing.
