Accra, Jan. 28, GNA – Government says the introduction of the Centralized Application Processing System (CAPS) will offer prospective tertiary students the convenience of applying to a specified number of universities without having to buy and complete multiple application forms.
The system involved centralized admissions, where an individual does not have to apply to various universities but to one common platform for the administrative or technical vehicle to offer placement to the students.
Professor Kwame Boafo Arthur, Chairman of Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) announced this in Accra at the inauguration of a Steering and Technical Committees to oversee the implementation of CAPS.
The system will replace the current stressful and expensive system of applying to different Universities.
The Professor said the CAPS project was in line with the 1992 constitution, which enjoined that, Tertiary Education shall be made equally accessible to all based on capacity by every appropriate means.
In line with this provision, the Ghana Education Strategic Plan 2018-2030 seeks to expand tertiary education in the country.
Prof Arthur indicated that Government was making a conscientious effort to improve the tertiary education gross enrolment ratio from 18.8 per cent to 40 per cent by 2030, stressing that there was the need to introduce measures to increase the proportion of the population to accelerate the country’s transformation.
Prof Mohammed Salifu, the Director-General of GTEC, commended the Committees for availing themselves to serve and stated that CAPS would provide a centralized approach to managing applications for admission into tertiary education institutions.
“The CAPS will improve on awareness and knowledge of tertiary education applications on decisions on what to study, where and how, at specific times through information provided on the application,” he said.
Reverend Prof Emmanuel Addow-Obeng, the Chairman of the CAPS Implementation Steering Committee, thanked GTEC for the honour and assured all of the committee’s commitment to ensure the development and deployment of a robust system.
