GPRTU unhappy with shoddy road works

Sunyani, Nov. 18, GNA – The Sunyani main branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has expressed dissatisfaction with shoddy road construction works by road contractors and attributed most road accidents to their nature.

The Union said the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the Ghana Highways Authority must ensure there was adequate funding to pay road contractors and ensure effective monitoring and supervision for delivery of quality jobs and their timely completion for the safety of motorists and travelling public.

Mr. Bismark Adjin-Frimpong, the branch Administrative Secretary said in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Sunyani, saying delays in completion of maintenance and rehabilitation works also delayed re-fixing of road signs and markings which contributed to road crashes.

He stated one way of preventing the shoddy roads works was for stakeholders like the chiefs, assembly members, Municipal/District Chief Executives and even Members of Parliament of affected areas to monitor the progress of work by the contractors to satisfy themselves with the quality of work or otherwise.

Mr. Adjin-Frimpong suggested there was the need for government to rehabilitate the single-lane highways and trunk roads dualize them to avoid head-on collisions.
