London light show honours health care workers

London, Jan. 1, (dpa/GNA) – London saw in the new year with a fireworks and light display paying tribute to National Health Service (NHS) workers and other key figures during the pandemic.

As well as fireworks above the Thames river, several light projections filled the sky over the O2 Arena. Residents were not allowed to watch the fireworks in public due to coronavirus restrictions and instead watched on TV.

The NHS logo was shown in a heart while a child’s voice said “thank you NHS heroes”.
An image was also projected of Captain Sir Tom Moore, the 100-year-old who raised 33 million pounds (45 million dollars) by walking in his backyard during isolation.

The Black Lives Matter movement was also recognised with a light-up black power fist, before a closing call from Sir David Attenborough for all people to work in 2021 to help the planet.

“To every single NHS worker: tonight London’s skies lit up to say a huge thank you,” London Mayor Sadiq Khan wrote on Twitter.

“As we look back on what has been one of the toughest years in history, your continued care and commitment, in the most challenging of circumstances, is heroic.”
